7 DJ Red Flags
to Watch For Before You Book

Families in the Bay Area get burned by the wrong DJ every weekend. These are the seven warning signs — and what to ask instead.

1

No written contract

If a DJ won't give you a signed agreement covering hours, price, and cancellation terms — walk away. A verbal promise means nothing when they don't show up. Always get it in writing before sending any money.

2

No backup equipment

Speakers fail. Controllers fail. A professional carries backup gear to every event. Ask directly: "What happens if your main speaker goes down mid-reception?" If they hesitate or don't have an answer, that's your answer.

3

Can't provide references from similar events

A DJ who does great at club nights may bomb at a quinceañera. Ask for 2–3 references from weddings or quinces specifically — and call them. Five minutes on the phone is worth more than any review page.

4

No MC experience — or MC only in one language

For a bilingual event, an English-only MC is going to disconnect half the room. Ask if they can MC in both English and Spanish, and ask them to give you an example introduction on the spot. You'll know immediately.

5

They won't talk through your timeline in advance

A good DJ will ask about your entrance songs, first dance, vals, bouquet toss — every moment. If they just say "don't worry, I've done hundreds of these," that means they're using the same cookie-cutter setlist for everyone, including you.

6

Price drops suspiciously fast

If a DJ quotes $1,200 and immediately drops to $700 the moment you push back — the original price was a bluff. Low-ball pricing usually means hobbyist equipment, no insurance, and no investment in the night. You get what you pay for.

7

They go quiet after the deposit

The most expensive mistake: paying a deposit, then not hearing back until a week before the event. Before you book, ask how they stay in contact between booking and event day. A professional will have a clear process — and will answer your messages.

DJ Junny has a signed contract, backup equipment, and bilingual MC experience — and he responds to every message. Check if your date is available.
